25 Random Things
1. I'm a new mommy and I love it, love it, love it.
2. I was two months pregnant and didn't know it. I told my friends not to worry if they found me in the Gulf of Mexico. It meant that I was pregnant!
3. It took me a month to name my girl. I believe a name is the greatest gift parents give their child. Her first name is Elizabeth because my great-great grandmother's name was Eliza, and I've never loved anyone as much I loved her (not even my mom). Her middle name, Adanne, is Igbo for 'mother's daughter.' I know that seems a little selfish, but in the end, I know I'm not going anywhere. As cynical as it may sound, men aren't guaranteed.
4. Elizabeth still doesn't have godparents because that, too, is a serious matter. It's not about who we like the most or who's the best friend or who will spend the most money. We need to know that their beliefs about child rearing resemble ours very closely. It's kinda understood that she will have four godparents, two godfathers and two godmothers. (We are both very strong minded.) Problem is, we can't decide who. We know two great men, but neither are married and neither have the potential. We also know great women, but we can't decide which two.
5. I hate teaching. I don't hate my students, just the job.
6. I still talk to my students from my first year teaching. I love them so much and am extremely proud of them. I can't believe they are graduating! I know stats show that MS is at the bottom in regards to education, but my kids in MS could run circles around my kids in TX. There's no comparison.
7. My dream job is to work for Donna Brazille. It's something about her that I just love. I can't put my finger on it.
8. When I was in love with literature, I wanted to be a critic. Candice Nicole wouldn't grade one of my papers because I didn't have enough sources. I told her that I had my own opinion. I didn't need to read what they thought! (That's the same arrogance that made me tell Dr. Glenn that I don't make Bs. It worked with her, but CLove wasn't hearing it.)
9. The mommy in me tells me to move to Baton Rouge and go to law school, but the genius (yeah, genius) in me won't do it. I have to go to school in DC or at least the metro area. I'm waiting on Eliza's first birthday. By the time that following August roles around, she'll be old enough to tell me if they do something to her.
10. I should've listened when Candice Nicole and Miranda told me to go straight to school because life gets in the way. They were so right!
11. I'm getting a relaxer Tuesday. I love my fro; I really do. It's just getting too difficult to maintain. When she gets a little older, I'll grow it back out.
12. I decided to grow my hair out after seeing Ranada's fro. I got the nerve to do it once I read Assata's autobio. She's my shero! Once I cut the relaxer out, I felt like a new person. I felt so liberated. IDK if that's the right word, but it was great! I sent all my pro-black friends the pic! I even have a pique with the fist! That was fiya! Thanks friend!
13. I befriended one of my besties because her name is Ashley. We became close trying to learn the steps for a Del-Teen show! We never agree on anything, not even the simple things! One thing is for certain though: she has my back!
14. I love my stepdad as much as I love my dad. I honestly can't see myself letting my dad walk me down the aisle. That's a hard pill to swallow.
15.My fam is super close. All we do is argue though! And we all look alike, cousins and all!
16. I have a serious phobia of the homeless in Atlanta. I know that's a mess, but it's the truth. My hands get sweaty and I feel a need to put some distance between us. Ask my fav line sisters. They'll tell you.
17. It's kinda hard for me to fully commit in relationships because my first love takes up so much space in my heart. I don't cheat with him. I just use him as my measuring stick.
18.I miss blogging, but everytime I sit down to write, I lose the drive.
19. I write to Eliza. In case something happens, I want her to have a peice of me. I write very blunt letters about me and my life experiences. I tell her of my past mistakes and accomplishments. I tell her what I want for her in life. Just in case something happens, I want her to have something more than pictures and the opinions and memories of my friends and family.
20. I have a serious issue with dating people who have been in jail for an extended period of time. One of my exes went to jail for a very noble reason, but I couldn't let go of the fact that he'd been to jail. Now, I only hope Eliza's dad loves her as much as Blair loves Michond.
21-25. When Tan originally tagged me, there were 25 random things. As I got tagged more often, the number dropped to 16. I decided this would be a happy medium! I love you though Tan!
